Visit Bowraville

Horseshoe Road & Killerkrankie Mountain

Horseshoe Road is a stunning 4WD or bike route between Bellingen and Bowraville, reaching a high point at Killiekrankie Mountain. Take North Arm Road until you turn onto Horseshoe Road (dirt road), turning off at Argents Hill and onwards to Killiekrankie Mountain.

The Great Koala National Park is a wonderful vision to protect the forests and wildlife of northern NSW, while also accommodating diverse recreational needs. In addition to bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding trails, two four wheel drive routes have been proposed. The first route follows the Horseshoe Road between Bellingen and Bowraville.

Leaving Bowraville on North Arm Road, the dirt Horseshoe Rd turns off after Argents Hill and climbs up towards Killiekrankie Mountain, the highest point on the road (1013m). The road traverses the ridge, with a small detour around a rock landslide. A highlight is the unique mountain top Gondwana Rainforest at Leagues Scrub.

We stopped for a short walk to Killiekrankie Mountain Lookout to enjoy the spectacular views of the New England Wilderness and to eat our picnic lunch.

A tree down completely blocking the road prevented us from continuing on to Bellingen, and a misjudgement with fuel limited our options for exploring side routes, so we went back down the way we came up. A stunning day out, we’ll be back to explore further!
